South Beach, Durban
It’s a little sad that when I think of South African my mind immediately goes to Apartheid. As someone who has never been there, I tend to think that although official Apartheid is over, there is probably still de facto apartheid (lower case) like the Jim Crow South in the US. This is a hopeful image. Nicely captured.
Michael, for South Africa I fear that the wounds of racism will need generations to heal. I spoke with medical doctors, and the amount of violence they are faced with through the victims is amazing. I don’t know if a similar structural racism as you see in the U.S. (and we see the bottom crust in many European countries) exists in South Africa, but at least there is an incredible social disparity growing at high speed, and this alone is dynamite for a society.
