The statue you see from the backside is St. Florian, famous for protecting against fire, allegedly invoked in Bavaria with the rhyme “Heiliger Sankt Florian, verschon’ mein Haus, zünd’ andre an” (Holy Saint Florian, do spare my house, ignite an other one).
The Florianiplatz, where this statue and now the maypole stands, of course has its name from St. Florian, and for a good reason: In medieval times, a terrible urban fire burned down the majority of houses and killed hundreds of inhabitants.
