Yep, the medieval roots of most European cities, with their tight confinements inside the walls and the cluttering together outside, for security as well as transport reasons, show through everywhere. Way before anybody started discussions about land consumption, this way of cohabitation seemed to have been developed in a quite future-proof manner.
Certainly a visually interesting and beautiful doorway and doors. Not the normal American definition of a backyard of course. 🙂
