    “In Germany, backfisch is an old-fashioned term for a young girl that is no longer a child but isn’t yet a woman. From talking to native Germans, it would seem that backfisch, in German at least, doesn’t have a pejorative connotation; rather, it stresses her innocence, even naivety, and thus might even be considered quite flattering.”

    Also refers to any fish that is fried.

  2. Tyler, here it definitely refers to the fish dish, not the description of a girl. The term ‘Backfisch’ for a girl in her teens is indeed old-fashioned, basically you will not find it in contemporary spoken language any more, but certainly in literature, especially from the northern part of Germany.
