On day 4 the weather was fine once again as we had proceeded far enough to the South, reaching the Italian border in the evening. Thanks to the Schengen treaty, nobody bothered with border control in any form.
The morning had begun with fetching the bikes from the hotel’s bike garage, matchingly equipped with a bicycle themed wall size poster.
As soon as we had left the plains of the Drau valley and the area around Villach, the scenery became more alpine again.
(And yes, the fair weather landscape colors rendered by the iPhone are apalling)
In hindsight, Tarvisio (the Austro-Italian border city) was one of the most beautiful places, even being aware of the bias caused by the fact that the next stages to the Mediterranean Sea were almost exclusively downhill or flat. The bar in the city center offered fine drinks, their coldness allowing to soothe the pain of an abused patella tendon.
