Re. the genesis of these formation, the books say that Africa was at a certain time covered by 9 km of cold lava, under which liquid Granite pressed upwards and formed not only those whaleback hills, but also in clefts and cavities very peculiar rock formations (like those balancing rocks posted earlier) came into existence. The lava stones weathered away, and the Granite surfaced.
Fascinating, you wonder how these were formed. Also the scale of the picture is really ambiguous, mysterious.
