Tom, Munich is the home of BMW, and they have representative buildings – even moderately interesting ones if you are into corporate bragging – in the north, so Mercedes needed something well visible and impressive. Showing a glass front with (guesswork only) 15×6 Mercedes Benz is certainly impressive.
Germany went through a long phase of developping car friendly cities, but meanwhile this is considered as not sustainable and planning concentrates more on urban space for pedestrians, cyclers and users of public transport – admittedly with a lot of debates, but air pollution and peak oil are strong arguments.
