Gott - God

Bad Reichenhall, Bavaria

The appropriate image for a sunday. When looking at it, I am pondering the question how they paid the royalities for using this intellectual property. I mean, in times of those anti-democratic ACTA negotiations and treaties, you become quite vulnerable if you get caught with a brand you don’t own.

Before The Rain Set In

Before The Rain Set In II

Bad Reichenhall, Bavaria

I almost killed my DSLR yesterday. I had left it on the table under the office window when an evening thunderstorm brought so much rain that the lightwell outside the window filled with dammed up rainwater that the sewerage system could not drain any more. So the water pressed through the window sealings and – I discovered it only minutes before it would have reached the camera. Narrow escape…

Turd Of The Month

Published by Nestlé on flickr under a Creative Commons License

A poignant reminder about the truth of the Einstein quote “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the the universe” reached me just now: The infamous baby-killer (albeit African ones) company of the seventies, Nestlé, will introduce “BabyNes”, just see this link.

I am just thinking who will replace George Clooney as media vehicle – what else – here, or is he pregnant maybe? Anyhow, Nestlé for sure has calculated the numbers of the high income yet intellectually challenged, that will form the hip-chiq customer basis for this thingie.

Think While You Shoot

Maximilianstrasse, Munich

“Think while you shoot” is an advice, that Martin Munkacsi gave when asked for a recipe to create good photographs. The exhibition in the hall of a great Bavarian insurance company was curated by F. C. Gundlach, himself not only a famous photographer in the middle of last century, but also a collector of photographs, Munkacsi’s among them. For me it was utmost amazing to see how lively his images were, especially when taking into account the technical difficulties of photography let’s say in 1930. I guess I should never complain about the performance of my own equipment…

Kids in Ambalangoda Also interesting for me was that the great H.C-B named Munkacsi’s image, ‘Boys Running Into the Surf at Lake Tanganyika’, as his sole and most important “spark that ignited my enthusiasm.” This image is also among the images that I remember from my early encounters with photography, and do recall it was in the back of my mind when I framed the image to the right in 2006.

Neither Odd Nor Molly

Maximilianstrasse, Munich

I can only speculate about the motives why a young lady would label herself ‘Odd Molly’, but most probably the keyword is ‘Label’. Even considerate, above-average intelligent people sometimes can mutate to voluntary advertising pillars, if the label is in or hot or both. I admit, I prefer to stick with Naomi Klein’s “no logo” motto. But probably some mollies are odd.

Fashion I Admire

Salzburg, Austria

Maybe this can be explained by the fact that Austria has lost all their Imperial and Royal coasts in WWI. Other attempts might result in speculations if air pollution is so high, or it is necessary to hide something… or there might be nothing to hide given you buy this outfit, or or or… Most probably I am truly, completely and forever lost for the world of fashion. But I don’t repent!

Update:

It’s not the Salzburg girls (or boys?). That much I can confirm.

Salzburg Cathedral, Austria

The Salzburg cathedral greets all the visitors with this banner, showing a sentence from the Holy Bible’s book of wisdom (9:14). I follow the anti-nuclear movement since 25+ years, but I can’t remember a bishop’s church publicly giving such a firm statement.

A worthy cause – albeit not the strongest image – for my blog post No. 1000, given wordpress’ calculations are correct.

Grossgmain, Austria

While static subject matter is no challenge for a tiny camera, moving subject is. In order to avoid exceeding stress, I worked the camera at the set-up festival for the maypole in Grossgmain, an Austrian village in the neighborhood. Unless I’ve learned some more tricks, sceneries like that are challenging the photographer (aka me) more than the camera. The good thing with that short maximum focal length is, that I had to foot-zoom right into the scenery to fill the frame, always remembering Capa: “”If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough”.
