kalmunai fishermen

kalmunai fishermen(2) first post after 17 days. not that i had given up photography or was just lazy. no, i was simply without network connect – thanks to my administration which didn’t bother to come up with a gprs connection for my mobile (only applied for it 5 months ago) – in eastern sri lanka on a business trip. and business kept me busy so i couldn’t go to one of the internet cafes. ok, the first days i was too busy but then incidents started so i didn’t want to go any more. that whole sri lanka could be heaven on earth without that bloody war (pun intended) and not enough that singhalese and tamils fight since 25 years, now also the muslims and the tamils use kalashnikov bullets as arguments. it makes a difference reading about this in the newspaper or walking into a 16 year old chap without uniform but with a gun. ok, he was friendly “what’s your name, where do you come from…” but probably due to my white skin, which is giving me an edge down there. in the 11 days i spent in batticaloa, probably 10 people were killed in the neighbouring towns, for political reasons.

you see from this burst of words how upset and fed up i am.

kalmunai fishermen(3) photography-wise it still has to be evaluated: 20 gig of raw files, but mostly of official events. at least i took my chance to sometimes get up really early (sunrise is at 5:45) and go to the fishermen at the beach, here in kalmunai.

three graces

taken during our holidays in croatia. whilst the color version is interesting in its own, i do like the graphical effect of the black and white here even more as it leads the eye more to the curve of the heads.

three graces(2) this abstract portrait i love for the patterns and shadows and clear areas. i am still undecided if i should crop it even a bit tighter.

lammeröfen

flare obviously is a weak spot of the tamron 11-18, on the other hands the situation present was pretty extreme and the front lens not completely clean. oh yeah, there is something to learn from every shot… the rock formation down there is really gorgeous and i decided to come back in june to get some flood water shots. 1954 water level was so high that the whole canyon was flooded, some 5 m higher than the standpoint of this shot.

lammeröfen(2) the 2nd image is from the same canyon, just a detail of the rocks. the whole place, a visitor balkony glued to the rocks maybe 10 m above the water and 20 or even more m below the surface makes you feel pretty small and humble, especially if you are almost alone like this time on a rainy father’s day.

more tulips

untypical for tulips, these are white. my favourite raw editor lightzone, which is now available as a commercial and supported product for linux – thanks lightcrafts – proved to be an excellent tool to just enhance the local contrast in the one focused tulip. the shot was taken with a more than 20 year old glass which i do like very much for its creamy bokeh when used white open.

more tulips(2) the tulip to the right is red, but as red is so abundant in springtime pictures, i went for ‘something completely different’ and used the b&w conversion of lightzone. the region tool allowed me to additionally blur distracting foreground elements.

those two shots were made during a two hour excursion with friends from the local photo group. having worked very concentrated for the whole day, it was a pleasure and recreation to come into a “flow” of photographing, just focusing on composition, framing. this happened regardless of the expected results and forms a great part of the pleasure photography gives me.

wild cherry trees

rainy day, subdued light, so the Father’s day was not a overly buoyant affair. still the walk with my nephew and his hour-long talk about the playstation and the possible hacks (oh how far away am i from a boy’s hobbies – my toys are much more expensive at least) were some fun. he silently carried my tripod and never complained when i was stopping for a picture.
the different kinds of green and the white of the cherries make up for a great scenery. this image again did teach me that close framing helps to concentrate what i really want to show. i was negligent when shooting, so i had to to re-compose through cropping.

think pink

think pink was a mountaineering related slogan some 20 years ago, connecting environment awareness with fashion and style. searching the web turned out that it still exists in both senses, however i could not find statement about it’s importance nowadays (again in both senses…)

here this title is to take literally, thanks to the tulips in my garden and my new 17-70mm lens which has a p&s-like macro focusing right from the glass of the front lens. first and foremost i bought it to reduce the number of lenses (and number of lens changes in dusty environment) for the upcoming business trip to sri lanka, beeing a replacement for my trusty 17-35 plus 28-75, but this macro function is really handy, too.
