After a lot of deliberation, it seems that both backup and restore measures were successful. There are some issues left with the galleries, but these are consequences of a gallery software update and I have to resolve these manually.

It turned out that my old strategy of distributing services was successful again: As the domain name was not with the hoster, I could easily contract a new hosting company and had not to wait if and when the old hosting provider decided to allow a transfer to the domain name. And a double-checked backup process, which kept all ressources on my sides and removed the dependency from the provider. But nobody is interested if you can backup, it’s only the restore that counts.

Problems like this of course you don’t have, when you stick with google, and there are good reasons for this. I had to pay the price for my independence.

  1. I can’t stop looking at the red box on the table! This is a very good demonstration of how intrusive red can be to our senses. You’d have thought that the local people would take more care and be aware of how such a small thing changes the ambiance of their carefully painted blue environment 🙂

    1. Colin, I do well remember the Benson & Hedges ads in the eighties – the used to place their golden boxes small yet visually powerful into their images. Here it’s that M***boro Country feeling that tries to visually own the scenery. But the blue was introduced in Sidi Bou Saïd only after the intervention of an Englishman in the twenties of last century.

  2. Markus, congratulations on a quick and by all measures successful turnaround getting this site up and running on a new host. Your planning and execution was proven good. I’ve had my share of hosting issues and moves as well…I believe I’m on number four since 2006 but the current one, two years so far, has been very good with no complaints from me — at least thus far.

    1. Thanks, Earl. It is reassuring to read that I am not the only one with difficulties with a hoster. It is really hard to sort the wheat from the chaff. This time I have good feeling – and 30 days money back guarantee.

  3. LOL – like Colin the first thing I saw was the red – and I wanted to ask you if you put the Mar****o there by yourself …

I hope the follow ups will work with your new restored blog now … 😉

    1. Martina, at least for the moment the blog feels responsive, much more than it was for the last 6 months with the old hoster. So let’s cross the fingers that it remains this way.
